West Fork of the North Branch. The river through Northbrook produces mosquitoes in backwaters, floodplain pools, and slow-moving sections. Floodwater mosquitoes hatch in massive swarms along the river corridor after heavy rains. Properties near the river face compounded pressure from both the waterway and the surrounding tree canopy.
Des Plaines River corridor. The forest preserves along Northbrook’s western flank include riverside woodland and low-lying floodplain that generates additional mosquito populations. West-side neighborhoods near the river trail experience persistent pressure from this corridor.
Three golf courses. Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Anetsberger, and Willow Hill all include maintained turf, water features, and irrigation that support mosquito populations affecting surrounding neighborhoods.
Extensive tree canopy. Northbrook’s Tree City USA canopy — both in the forest preserves and along residential streets — provides extensive daytime resting habitat for adult mosquitoes.
