The ravine system. Glencoe’s ravines are mosquito breeding machines. After every rain, water collects in low spots, tree hollows, leaf dams, and depressions along the ravine floor. This standing water is shaded by the dense tree canopy, so it doesn’t evaporate quickly — giving mosquito larvae the several days they need to develop. Ravine-lot properties can have breeding habitat within 50 feet of their back door that they can’t easily access, modify, or drain.
Skokie Lagoons. The 200-acre Skokie Lagoons on Glencoe’s western border is the largest single mosquito production area affecting the village. These interconnected lagoons, surrounded by marsh and forest preserve land, produce mosquitoes by the millions throughout the warm months. Prevailing breezes carry them east into Glencoe’s western neighborhoods, and from there they disperse across the village.
Chicago Botanic Garden. Adjacent to the Skokie Lagoons, the 385-acre Chicago Botanic Garden includes ponds, waterways, and extensive irrigated plantings that support mosquito breeding. Together with the lagoons, this creates an unbroken band of mosquito habitat along Glencoe’s entire western border.
Mature tree canopy. Glencoe’s century-old oaks, maples, and elms create a dense overhead canopy that provides ideal daytime resting habitat for adult mosquitoes. The shade also keeps breeding water cool and prevents evaporation — extending the window for larval development.
Lake Michigan microclimate. Glencoe’s lakefront location creates humid conditions that mosquitoes favor. Lake breezes carry moisture inland, and the combination of humidity and shaded ravines creates an environment where mosquitoes thrive.
Seasonal barrier treatments. We treat your yard every three weeks from May through September. Each visit applies EPA-registered barrier products to vegetation, shrubs, tree trunks, fence lines, and shaded resting areas where adult mosquitoes spend their daylight hours. The treatment kills mosquitoes on contact and provides residual protection between visits.
Breeding site reduction. During each visit, we identify and address standing water sources on your property — clogged gutters, birdbaths, plant saucers, low spots, and drainage issues. While we can’t control the ravines or the Skokie Lagoons, reducing breeding sites on your property significantly cuts the mosquito population in your immediate yard.
Special event treatments. Planning an outdoor gathering? We offer targeted treatments timed to your event — applied 24 to 48 hours before for maximum effectiveness.
We can’t eliminate every mosquito coming from a ravine or the Skokie Lagoons — those are permanent breeding areas outside anyone’s control. But our barrier treatment dramatically reduces mosquito populations in your yard by killing adults resting in your vegetation and preventing reproduction on your property. Clients on ravine lots consistently report the difference between treated and untreated seasons is significant.
Every three weeks from May through September — approximately seven treatments per season. This schedule maintains consistent protection as products degrade naturally between visits.
