Hawthorn Woods has everything mosquitoes need — ponds, wetland areas, a golf course with water features, dense tree canopy for daytime resting, and acre-plus properties with countless spots where water collects after rain. The village’s wooded, natural character is what makes it special to live in, but it also creates one of the more challenging mosquito environments in our service area. If you’ve tried citronella candles and bug zappers and still can’t sit outside after 6 PM, you’re not alone.
Quick Kill Exterminating has been helping Hawthorn Woods homeowners take back their outdoor spaces since 1990. Our seasonal mosquito program targets the conditions specific to your property — and on larger wooded lots, that means a different approach than a standard suburban yard treatment.
Hawthorn Woods Country Club golf course. The Arnold Palmer-designed course includes water hazards, ponds, and irrigated turf — all mosquito breeding sources. Homes in the Country Club community are directly exposed to mosquitoes breeding on the course.
Natural ponds and wetland areas. The village’s natural low-lying areas, ponds, and wetland features throughout the community produce mosquitoes continuously through the warm months.
Dense tree canopy. Hawthorn Woods’ mature trees provide extensive daytime resting habitat for mosquitoes. The denser your tree cover, the more mosquitoes shelter on your property during the day — waiting to become active at dusk.
Large lots with standing water sources. Acre-plus properties have more places for water to collect — in natural depressions, tree hollows, leaf debris, garden features, birdbaths, unused pots, equipment, and low spots in the landscape. Each one is a potential breeding site.
Rural-edge location. Hawthorn Woods’ position at the edge of more rural Lake County means mosquitoes from surrounding agricultural land and natural areas add to locally breeding populations.
The most common mosquito in Hawthorn Woods and the primary carrier of West Nile virus in Illinois. Breeds in stagnant water — gutters, birdbaths, any container holding water for more than a week. Most active dusk to dawn.
An aggressive daytime biter — black body with white stripes. Breeds in tiny amounts of water. Short flight range, so it breeds and bites on the same property. If you’re getting bitten during the day, this is likely the culprit.
Populations explode after heavy rains. Hawthorn Woods’ natural low areas and wooded terrain hold water after storms, making this species particularly problematic. Aggressive biters that travel further than other species.
Property assessment. We inspect your property to identify breeding sites, resting areas, and the conditions driving activity. On larger Hawthorn Woods lots, we focus treatment on the areas where you actually spend time — patios, decks, outdoor dining areas, play areas, and pool surrounds — rather than trying to treat every acre.
Targeted barrier treatment. We spray where mosquitoes rest during the day — undersides of leaves, shrub beds, ground cover, fence lines, under decks, around patios, along the tree line closest to your living areas. Each application kills on contact and provides approximately 21 days of residual protection.
Breeding site reduction. We treat standing water that can’t be eliminated with larvicide and advise on source removal across your property.
Recurring treatments. We return every three weeks from late May through September. Consistent retreatment is critical in Hawthorn Woods because the surrounding natural habitat continuously produces new mosquitoes.
April – Early May: First mosquitoes emerge. Starting early prevents population explosions later.
Late May – June: Populations ramp up with warm weather and spring rains.
July – August: Peak season. Hot, humid weather and thunderstorms create ideal conditions. West Nile virus risk is highest.
September – Early October: Activity declines but continues on warm evenings into October.
West Nile Virus. Illinois ranks among the top states for West Nile cases. The northern house mosquito that carries the virus breeds in standing water throughout Hawthorn Woods.
Dog heartworm. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm to dogs and occasionally cats. On larger properties where pets spend more time outdoors, reducing mosquitoes provides additional protection alongside veterinary medication.
Late April to early May is ideal. Suppressing the first generation compounds all season.
Yes. EPA-registered products applied in targeted resting areas. Stay off treated areas until dry — about 30 minutes.
We focus on the living areas — typically a 50-100 foot zone around your home, patio, pool, and outdoor spaces. That’s where you need protection. Treating deep into the woods isn’t necessary or effective.
Our treatment typically reduces activity by 80-90%. Properties with adjacent ponds or golf course frontage may see slightly more pressure, but the improvement is still dramatic.
